Modern Jazz
JAZZ
(Minimum age 6 years)
Students will study jazz through the Modern Theatre Dance (Jazz) syllabus of the Imperial Society of Teachers
of Dancing. This well-tried and carefully thought-out syllabus develops versatile dancers with a broad dance vocabulary. Students learn a variety of dance styles particular to both the modern and jazz (both traditional jazz and up-to-date) dance forms. The youngest children’s work is age appropriate and based on natural movements, walking, running, jumping and skipping. Modern dance is characterized by use of the floor, working with gravity, suspension and freedom of expression. The jazz style is often associated with musicals such as Cats, West Side Story, Chicago, and Fame. Students at all levels will develop coordination, balance, strength and flexibility and a sense of performance.
The Jazz Awards are an exciting, enjoyable complement to regular jazz classes. These high energy classes of combinations are available to students in the Senior School (Intermediate Foundation and up).
Jazz Funk and Isolations is an energetic, upbeat class which augments the younger students' training through a focus on age appropriate body isolations and cool, fun combinations. Students from nine to thirteen years old are eligible to enroll in this class. Nine and ten year olds must be enrolled in another dance class to participate. It is highly recommended eleven to thirteen year olds take another class in order to receive a comprehensive training.
