In October 1999, Mrs McLeod, founder of RCSB, and her husband Norman, were introduced by a young Cuban dancer, Noibis Licea, to students and staff at Escuela Profesional de Arte, Bayamo, Granma, Cuba. Two years previously, they had met Noibis whilst they were vacationing at a hotel in Granma province. This meeting led to Mr & Mrs McLeod visiting and staying many times with Noibis and his parents, who lived in Bayamo. Noibis is now an American citizen, lives in New York, and is currently attending New York University enrolled in a Masters of Fine Arts programme.
Since 1999, Mrs McLeod has visited the school every year and been invited to teach there. On one occasion she was accompanied by Hannah Briggs, a student from RCSB.
A very close connection has been formed between the school in Granma and our studio in Guelph. We have shipped, with a great deal of generous help from students, parents, and friends, approximately $300,000 of donated dance supplies and good clothing.
When Mrs McLeod is at Escuela Profesional de Arte, they show their sincere appreciation to RCSB by presenting shows where the students wear donated costumes, shoes, etc, and put on many classes which Mrs McLeod thoroughly enjoys watching.
There are more photos of the Cuban students and the donations in the studio foyer. If, when you see Mrs McLeod at the studio, and she is not teaching, feel free to ask her any questions you may have.
